On the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 8, the All Space Considered team recalls the lead up to the mission and the events of the first mission to leave Earth and travel to another world. (Bonus feature: what to tell your friends and acquaintances when they try to claim the moon landings were a hoax!)

Apollo 8, the second manned spaceflight mission in the United States Apollo space program, was launched on December 21, 1968, and became the first manned spacecraft to leave low Earth orbit, reach the Moon, orbit it, and safely return.
