Can The New Scottish Rocket Companies Make It To Space?
Scotland has just approved the development of a vertical launch facility in Sutherland on the north coast, and there are 2 companies based in Scotland currently developing launch vehicles.
Orbex is developing an 18 ton launcher with 225kg payload, Fueled by LOX & Propane
Skyrora have plans for a 55 ton vehicle with 315kg payload, burning Hydrogen peroxide & Kerosene. There's a good chance we'll see some launches in 2021, and possibly commercia payloads in 2022.
Scotland at centre of new 'space race' for UK's first launch site
Scotland is set for a space race to see whether the UK's first spaceport will be in Shetland or the Highlands. The most northerly outpost of Britain, Unst in the Shetland Isles, is anticipating a tourism boom as plans have been unveiled for a privately funded project to build a satellite launch site which could send tourists into space. More than £2million has been poured into the proposals by investors but planning permission has yet to be submitted to the Shetland Islands Council. In Sutherland, Caithness, the UK Space Agency plans to build a vertical launch site, with plans submitted to Highland Council on February 7 and construction is expected to start this year. However, the £17.3 million Space Hub Sutherland will not cater to 'space tourists' - unlike the Shetland Space Centre. A report commissioned by the UK Space Agency had identified Unst as the best spot in Britain for launching small satellites into space. Crofters on the tiny island have welcomed plans for the Shetland Space Centre and have agreed to lease land in a bid to make it happen. And the local authority welcomed the £2,050,000 investment from private equity firm Leonne International. Chair of the council's development committee, Alastair Cooper, said: "This announcement of private equity funding for the Shetland Space Centre is positive news. "The council is committed to supporting local economic opportunities and we hope to maximise the benefit for Unst and Shetland as this project develops. With a wealth of industrial experience in Shetland, there is great potential for the existing business sector to help this pioneering space industry to grow. "The space sector is a key area for development and diversification in our future economy. "Space services wi
As plans for the UK's first spaceport take shape, opposition grows
Trekking through the muddy peat bog on the A'Mhoine peninsula on the remote north coast of Scotland, it seems hard to imagine that within a couple of years, that this remote, beautiful, wetland landscape could be the UK's first spaceport, launching small satellites into the lucrative polar orbit.…

Sutherland Spaceport Prime Minister's Question
Scotland Is Going To Host The UK's First Spaceport
The UK Government recently awarded contracts to Lockheed Martin and Orbex to being building and launching rockets out of a remote peninsula in the very north of the scottish mainland.
Lots of you have been asking whether this is a good place for a launch site, and whether the UK can even make an impact in the space launch market.
UK Join The Space Race
Did you see the recent announcement at the Farnborough Airshow? Orbex has gained £30m in funding to enable them to set up the first Space Port in Sutherland Scotland. There was a bit of a media frenzy but we managed to elbow the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 etc. out of the way and we had a quick chat with Chris Larmour, the CEO of Orbex to find out more. Whilst we won’t be on the first flight, we will do our best to be there to see the takeoff – scheduled for 2021. Sutherland UK Spaceport? BBC Breakfast 16/7/18
A remote, boggy stretch of land on the north coast of Scotland is likely to become the UK's first spaceport. The A'Mhoine Peninsula in Sutherland has been chosen as the most suitable place from which to launch rockets vertically to put satellites in orbit. The UK Space Agency is giving Highlands and Islands Enterprise £2.5m towards the development of the facility. HIE will work closely with a consortium that includes the American aerospace giant Lockheed Martin. The goal would be to have launches as early as possible in the 2020s.

Members' Business - Scottish Parliament: 28th April 2015
http://www.scottish.parliament.uk - Scottish Parliament Members' Business. Debate on the subject of— S4M-12526 John Scott: Prestwick Airport Spaceport Bid—That the Parliament welcomes the inclusion of Glasgow Prestwick Airport in the shortlist of sites being considered to host the UK’s first spaceport; believes that the location of a spaceport at Glasgow Prestwick Airport would represent an opportunity to increase the airport’s revenue, enhance the reputation of the Prestwick aerospace campus as a centre of excellence and provide a boost for the Ayrshire economy, and notes the view that the airport should be promoted as Scotland’s preferred bidder to be the UK’s first commercial spaceport.
