Chinese Astronauts in Tiangong-2 Prepare for Return to Earth
Chinese astronauts on board the Tiangong-2 Space Lab have completed most of their experimental tasks and are now preparing for their return to earth. On the penultimate day of the 30-day mission on Wednesday, China's Tiangong-2 space laboratory, Chinese astronauts Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong were busy collecting experiment samples and working on tasks. According to the astronauts, they will finalize their biological rhythm research and space application systems and will return with various leaf and plant samples used in their experiments. Due to the limited size of the re-entry capsule, astronauts will only bring back a selection of their samples and electronically stored experimental data. Before their return, the astronauts will cooperate with ground staff to make key preparations. "Firstly, astronauts need to make physical preparations and our center has provided them with a complete health protection plan. Secondly, they will prepare the vital data and samples that will be brought back. Meanwhile, astronauts need to select settings for following up the work in the space laboratory and set the orbital flight path. Third, astronauts needs to make further preparations, especially for critical operations. This includes normal and pre-arranged planning. The above preparations will be conducted through cooperation between the astronauts and ground staff. These tasks will lay a foundation for the return and landing," said Chen Xin, vice director of Astronaut Center of China. The astronauts are scheduled to arrive back on earth on Friday, with the re-entry capsule set to land at the Siziwang Banner in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The astronauts will return to Beijing after a short break and will have their health condition thoroughly examined. "When returning to Beijing, we will focus on helping the astronauts recover their physical state safely and to re-adapt to the earth's gravity. Then, there will be programs focused on their overall recovery including various aspects of their physical state. We will make a full evaluation on the astronauts based on their physical and mental state. Meanwhile, as many in-orbit experiments have been conducted in the space lab, we need to complete post-flight data collection and other related tasks as planned in the original experimental designs during this period," said Chen.

Xi Jinping Calls Tiangong-2 Astronauts
General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping, also Chinese president and chairman of the Central Military Commission, called the two astronauts aboard the Tiangong-2 space lab from the command center of China manned space program on Wednesday. The 49-year-old Jing Haipeng and 37-year-old Chen Dong went into the space on Shenzhou-11 manned spacecraft on Oct. 17, and they docked with the Tiangong-2 on Oct. 19. Jing and Chen are scheduled to stay in Tiangong-2 for 30 days. "On behalf of the CPC Central Committee, the State Council, the Central Military Commission and people of all ethnic groups of the country, I would like to express my sincere greetings to you," said Xi on the phone. Xi requested about the physical conditions of the astronauts and how their life and work was going on in the space. "Thanks for you Secretary General's concern. We are very well, and various work items are proceeding smoothly. We can also watch Xinwen Lianbo simultaneously in the space. The pictures are smooth and clear. When we saw your pictures at the sixth plenary session of the 18th CPC Central Committee, we felt warmth and excited," said Jing. "China's manned space program has ascended a new height. The working and living conditions of Chinese astronauts in space have been greatly improved. We are proud of our great motherland," he added. "I have been adapted to the environment in space. My diet and daily life are normal here, and my work is progressing as planned. I will continue to work hard and complete the following tasks," said Chen. Xi said Jing and Chen's collaboration and coordination in overcoming difficulties demonstrated their excellent personal qualities. People on the ground are pleased to see they are in good conditions and the motherland and all the people are looking forward to their return. Jing and Chen pledged to finish all the tasks. Before making the call, Xi watched the brain-computer interaction in-orbit repair experiment on Tiangong-2 at the Command Center. The Tiangong-2 space lab is equipped with an in-orbit repair robotic arm terminal operation system, which is used by astronauts to test the brain-computer interaction in-orbit repair technology that will allow astronauts to control equipment with their thoughts rather than manually. The system, 1.35 meters long in total, includes the human-simulated robotic arm, human-simulated robotic hand, binocular global camera, hand-eye camera, controller, data glove and three-dimensional mouse. The size of the human-simulated robotic hand conforms to the size of the hand of the astronauts in extravehicular spacesuit. It was jointly developed by the fifth institute of the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), the Harbin Institute of Technology, and the Beijing Institute of Technology. The experiment verifies the in-orbit technology of the core parts of the robotic arm, exploring the brain-computer interaction mode to accumulate experience of space robots working in orbit. During the experiment, the robotic hand will simulate the typical moves of dismantling the thermal insulation materials, unscrewing the electric plug, and using electric tools to turn the screws in the orbit. Other tests include robotic joint stiffness in-orbit identification and grasping floating balls. This is the first such experiment in the world.
