BIG BANG: The Birth of Everything? James Webb Is Forcing Scientists to Rethink! SPACETIME S08E01
BIG BANG: The Birth of Everything? James Webb Is Forcing Scientists to Rethink! SPACETIME S08E01
The Big Bang marks the beginning of space, time and matter—but what actually happened in the first moments of our universe? This documentary explores the latest scientific understanding of the Big Bang, cosmic inflation, dark matter, dark energy, quantum physics and the formation of galaxies. Featuring insights from leading physicists and astrophysicists, it explains why the origin of the universe remains one of science's greatest mysteries. From the first fractions of a second to the discoveries of the James Webb Space Telescope, this documentary examines what we know, what remains uncertain and why the search for our cosmic origins continues.
What is the Big Bang theory?
The Big Bang theory is the leading scientific explanation for the origin of the universe. It proposes that space, time, matter and energy began approximately 13.8 billion years ago in an extremely hot, dense state before expanding rapidly. The theory is supported by observations such as the expansion of the universe and the cosmic microwave background radiation.
What happened before the Big Bang?
Scientists currently have no definitive answer to what existed before the Big Bang. Since space and time themselves are believed to have originated with the Big Bang, the concept of "before" may not apply in the conventional sense. Several hypotheses—including quantum gravity, cyclic universes and the multiverse—are being explored, but none has yet been confirmed.
How does the James Webb Space Telescope challenge the Big Bang theory?
The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered surprisingly massive and well-developed galaxies that formed only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. Rather than disproving the Big Bang, these observations suggest that galaxy formation occurred much faster than previously expected and may require refinements to existing cosmological models.

Astrophysicists Discuss New Evidence for Dark Matter Stars
Did JWST discover dark stars? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice explore the dark universe and how learning about dark matter could help uncover the mystery of JWST’s primordial objects with theoretical physicist Katherine Freese.
Check out Katherine Freese's new book, 'Alien Earths: Planet Hunting in the Cosmos' https://read.macmillan.com/lp/alien-earths/
Is dark matter a particle? We discuss Einstein, humanity's big questions, and particle candidates for dark matter. What is a WIMP? Learn about the four forces in the universe and their relationship to dark matter. How do WIMPs play into supersymmetry’s theoretical framework?
We explore the process of making a prediction and eventually getting it verified experimentally, like Enrico Fermi and neutrinos. How do we verify a dark matter particle? If dark matter doesn’t interact with us does it interact with itself? When was dark matter created? Discover how dark matter keeps galaxies together and how dark stars may be the possible answer to what JWST found in the early universe.
What is a dark star? Could dark stars be how we get supermassive black holes? We discuss the difficulty in solving the supermassive black hole problem. Did any of the JWST primordial objects line up with the prediction of dark stars? In addition to The Big Bang, was there a Dark Big Bang? We talk about what it's like to introduce a new idea and receive resistance and the progression of science.

In 2023, a team of researchers proposed that our universe experienced not one, but TWO Big Bangs about a month apart from one another. The first for the stuff described by our Standard Model of Particle Physics. And the second for that ever elusive Dark Matter and all the particles associated with it.

Did the Universe Begin? Rethinking the Penrose Hawking & BGV theorems
The Big Bang happened but was it really the beginning of time? Two theorems are often used to suggest it was: The Penrose Hawking Theorem and the BGV Theorem . But new papers out in 2023 have re examined the issue of the beginning and come to a surprising conclusion. We talk to Roger Penrose, Alan Guth, Alex Vilenkin, Ghazal Geshnizjani, Robert Brandenberger, Damien Easson and Niayesh Afshordi to discuss the ultimate question of whether or not the universe had a beginning. Cosmic Cycles: Echoes of the Big Bang
NASA studies the makeup and workings of the universe, from the smallest particles of matter and energy to its large-scale structure and evolution. Scientists look far back in space and time to learn the full cosmic history of stars and galaxies. They tease out details of the environments around black holes and observe the most powerful explosions since the big bang. NASA is discovering numerous planets beyond our solar system, decoding how planetary systems form, and learning how environments hospitable for life develop.
“Cosmic Cycles: A Space Symphony" is a groundbreaking collaboration between acclaimed composer Henry Dehlinger, NASA, and the National Philharmonic, featuring a unique fusion of music and video in seven multimedia works on the Sun, Earth, Moon, Planets, and Cosmos. This transformative project takes the audience on a captivating voyage through the universe, showcasing the beauty and power of the marriage between music and science.

Why Does The Universe Exist? Fan Grab Bag With Neil deGrasse Tyson
Why does the universe exist? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice answer fan questions about black holes, wormholes, the expansion of the universe and more! What are our options to solve the crisis in cosmology?
Can we answer the question: why does the universe exist? We discuss the meaning of life and get scientific and philosophical with it. Is it all just physics? What happens to matter when it reaches the singularity and not just the event horizon? Learn about Hawking radiation and spaghettification and the mysteries that still persist.
What’s the deal with the green comet? Find out about Oort cloud comets and where the comet gets its green. How big does an asteroid have to be to blow an atmosphere off a planet? What would happen if you pointed a laser pointer at a black hole? We explore gravitational redshift, time dilation, as well as how artificial intelligence will perceive the universe. Could we establish a wormhole for interstellar travel?
Discover the Big Rip and where the heat energy emitted from stars goes. Is the universe getting colder? We weigh the options for resolving the crisis in cosmology, how the JWST impacts it, and whether we are alone in the universe. Plus, find out time travel theories on how the Titanic really sank.
Thanks to our Patrons Fadi Hayek, Kemlyn Brazda, pascale manales, Jules Martin, and Scott Alderman for supporting us this week.

Where did the Universe come from? – with Geraint Lewis
Modern physics is split in two. To explain the large-scale Universe, we talk of the curved and expanding spacetime of Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. For the small-scale, we talk about probabilities and uncertainties and the language of quantum mechanics. Whilst these two pillars of physics are both supremely accurate and immensely powerful theories, they are, at heart, incompatible. But to understand the past, present and future history of the universe, we must get these two theories to play nicely together.
