Space exploration in 2022
James Head, professor of Geological Sciences at Brown University in the U.S. worked with NASA on the Apollo program in the late 1960s. He spoke to CGTN Europe’s anchor Jamie Owen to discuss China’s role in the space community and the “amazing” discovery of Moon rock samples from Chang’e 5, the first lunar mission by any nation in over 40 years.
Head describes 2022 as one of the most exciting yet in space discovery but has a warning over the growth of space debris that is polluting the Low Earth Orbit.

What are the limits of space exploration?
Space research has proved successful in low Earth orbit and now returning to the moon or landing on Mars are the main goals for space exploration.
But what will be needed to achieve safe and successful exploration in future? Is human fragility a limit we can overcome when exploring space, and how?
At GLEX2021, The Global Space Exploration Conference in St Petersburg, we met Eleonora Zeminiani, space engineer, from Thales Alenia Space, to get her expert view on these issues - and to learn about sustainable space travel.

What can a telescope in a jumbo jet tell us about the origins of life?
How did life get to Earth? The first step was assembling the ingredients and it seems as though comets may hold some of the answers.
However, infrared imaging of extra-terrestrial objects is difficult from ground-based observatories because water vapor in Earth's lower atmosphere blocks most infrared radiation. But SOFIA operates from a modified Boeing 747 and soars above this vapor to capture infrared signatures.
Most recently, its infrared instruments were able to capture unique images of Comet Catalina, detecting carbon in the dusty glow of the comet’s tail. The discovery suggests that comets like Catalina may may have delivered carbon, a key building block of life, to Earth, Mars and other planets during the early formation of the solar system.
Shini Somara talks to a scientist behind the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, better known as SOFIA.

SPACE JUNK - #RAZOR #Shorts
🌠 The sky at night is big and bright, right? 🌌
But it’s not quite as empty as it looks… Space Junk is threatening space exploration, and even the communication systems we use here on Earth.
There are now many thousands of bits of debris hurtling around the Earth at ten times the speed of a bullet. As you can imagine, if they hit satellites or rockets, it won’t be good news.

Dark skies and food versus exercise #RAZOR
Why do so many diets lead to more weight gain? Do more active people have faster metabolisms? Is exercise essential for weight loss? 🥕 🍏
Over the past 20 years, evolutionary biologist Herman Pontzer has conducted ground-breaking studies across a range of settings, including pioneering fieldwork with Hadza hunter-gatherers in northern Tanzania where he found that, crucially, although the tribespeople moved frequently during the day, they burned about the same number of total calories daily as much-more-sedentary Westerners. As he tells RAZOR's Emma Keeling, we humans have developed an innate, unconscious ability to reallocate our body’s energy usage. 🏃♀️
We also head to Tucson Arizona which is famous for its dark skies. Its three observatories attract astronomers from across the United States. 🌌 🇺🇸
So when the local government decided to upgrade its streetlights they made sure to consult with an astronomer. What they weren’t expecting was that the astronomer, John Barantine, had his own agenda: he wanted to find out just how much of the light pollution in his town was down to street lighting and he was going to measure it from space. Shini Somara reports. 💡

#RAZOR: Chang’e-5 - A new era of lunar exploration
Named after the Chinese goddess of the moon, the Chang’e-5 mission roars towards its target - the lunar surface. It’s the People's Republic of China’s first ever sample return mission, and if successful, it will be the third country to complete it.
The mission seeks to collect around 2 kilograms of samples by drilling to a depth of up to two meters and scooping up lunar surface material.
The mission will help our understanding not only of the moon but other planets too.

#RAZOR: Flying to the edge of space using only solar power
Most people try to protect our planet by recycling, but for Raphael Domjan that's not enough, the Swiss explorer plans to demonstrate the power of renewable energy by flying to the edge of our planet's atmosphere – powered only by the sun.
"I will be so high that I will need the spacesuit," explains Domjan. "It will be really cold, and the pressure very low ... so it's a huge technical challenge."

Interior design for the first Martians
How the first humans live on Mars is a complex vision that scientists are trying to answer. Radiation exposure, toxic soil and freezing temperatures are only some of the multitude of challenges facing those willing to try.
Emma Keeling goes to the London Design Museum to meet interplanetary architect Xavier De Kestellier to get a glimpse of how martians may live in the future.
Is asteroid mining just science fiction?
Some experts believe that the first asteroid mining may be as little as 20 years away. RAZOR explores how one day the asteroid belt might be in reach for commercial expeditions.

Mission to Mars special: RAZOR full episode
In this special RAZOR episode, Emma Keeling takes us on a journey to Mars in the search for life.
Since 2012, Nasa's Curiosity Rover has been traversing the red planet to see if it could support microbial life. Now the ExoMars team are attempting to search deeper with the Rosalind Franklin Rover which will be launched to Mars in 2022.
Abbie Hutty and Professor Andrew Coates guide Emma through the suite of instruments used by the Rosalind Franklin Rover to drill beneath the Martian surface and answer one of the great questions of life - are we truly alone in the universe?
In part two, Emma meets interplanetary architect Xavier De Kestellier who has formulated a vision for what life will be like for the first set of humans who head to our sister planet.
His habitat, which was designed as part of a NASA competition, has undergone rigorous scientific debate to ensure its feasibility and potential delivery. Xavier takes Emma on a tour of his 3D pod that has been installed at London's Design Museum, giving her a glimpse of how Martians will be living in the future.
Dark Matter Special: RAZOR full episode
We see only five per cent of all matter – that's things like galaxies, stars, planets, humans and all other life on earth. The rest is invisible - 25% of our universe is dark matter and a full 70% is dark energy. The nature of dark matter is one of the major questions in modern physics. Dr. Joseph Walding and an international team of physicists at SNOLAB are searching for the elusive particle. In this RAZOR special Shini Somara travels to Canada where they've built a super sensitive detector 2 kilometres underground in the world's deepest science laboratory.
Discovering dark matter: RAZOR
Scientists currently can only account for around 5 percent of the universe's matter. The vast majority of our universe - an estimated 25 percent, dark matter and 70 percent, dark energy - is yet to be discovered.
Razor's Dr Shini Somara travels to SNOLAB in Creighton Mine, outside of Sudbury, Canada to witness efforts to unravel one of science's enduring mysteries.
The 'Analog Astronauts' training for the first Mars missions: RAZOR
Emma Keeling is in Innsbruck to visit the Austrian Space Forum, a research entity gathering knowledge so that one day, when people will go to Mars, they know how to do it in the most efficient and safe way possible. The 'Analog Astronauts' overcome rigorous selection to make it onto the Austrian space program. Recruits will have to successfully pass the spacesuit simulator and technical tests before taking part in a highly challenging mock trip to Mars. They hope to be part of a one month mission to the Negrev Desert in Israel next year.
