Is 'Oumuamua Alien Technology?
Three years ago, we detected the first interstellar object passing through the Solar System, `Oumuamua. Ever since, astronomers have been debating the origins of this strange body. Whilst many hypothesize an asteroid, the media is ablaze with the possibility that it could be alien technology. Join us today for a discussion of this theory and the counter-arguments proposed. Open Space 72: Electric Sails with Dr. Pekka Janhunen
Dr. Pekka Janhunen is a researcher with the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the inventor of the Electric Solar Wind Sail concept, using the solar wind as a propulsion system for spacecraft. These could allow spacecraft to explore many regions of the Solar System without any onboard propellant at all. More information about Dr. Janhunen:

Lightsail 2 Sails On Sunlight At Last
Lightsail 2 was launched in June as part of the STP-2 launch on Falcon Heavy, after a few weeks of checking systems out it deployed its solar sail and began attempting to raise its orbit. Earlier this week the Planetary Society declared success - raising the apogee of the orbit higher, even if the orbit on average got lower due to atmospheric drag.

Planetary Society Deploys LightSail 2’s Solar Sail. What Does The Future Hold For Solar Sails?
Where you can travel in space depends on how much propellant you’ve got on board your rocket and how efficiently you can use it. But there’s a source of free propellant right here in the Solar System - the Sun - which is streaming out photons in all directions. You just need to catch them. And right now, the Planetary Society’s new LightSail 2 spacecraft is testing out just how well it’ll work. Light Sail 2 Photos:

The Planetary Society has inspired millions of people to explore other worlds and seek other life. With the mission to empower the world's citizens to advance space science and exploration, its international membership makes the non-governmental Planetary Society the largest space interest group in the world. Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray and Louis Friedman founded the Planetary Society in 1980. Bill Nye, a longtime member of the Planetary Society's Board, serves as CEO."
LightSail 2 mission highlights
This video shows brief highlights from LightSail 2, a crowdfunded space mission by The Planetary Society launching in June 2019. LightSail 2 aims to become the first spacecraft in Earth orbit propelled solely by sunlight. The goal is to raise LightSail 2’s orbit by a measurable amount, showing that solar sailing is a viable means of propulsion for CubeSats—small, standardized spacecraft that are part of a global effort to lower the cost of space exploration. Project Dragonfly. A Laser-Powered Probe to Alpha Centauri
The distances between stars are so vast, it’s hard to wrap your mind around it. Even our far flung Voyagers have barely reached interstellar space, and would take tens of thousands of years to get to even the nearest star. But scientists and engineers are considering what it would actually take to send a spacecraft to another star. It’s called Project Dragonfly, and would use existing or near future technologies to send a 3,000 kg spacecraft to Alpha Centauri within 100 years. Project Dragonfly paper

LightSail 2 - Operational Readiness Test
The LightSail 2 team gathered in Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on July 17 and 18 for a Mission Readiness Review (MRR) and Operational Readiness Test (ORT). The MRR is a general review to get everyone on the same page before launch, and the ORT is a dress rehearsal to simulate key mission events using a clone of the spacecraft. NASA Solar Sails Could Allow Interstellar Travel - Cheddar Explains
Solar sails could shorten space travel time by thousands of years. By using the power of the sun, photons bounce against the sail and give it a push to propel the satellite to it's destination. NASA plans to test the solar sails to take a closer look at near earth asteroids. LightSail 2: The Next Step
LightSail 2, a citizen-funded spacecraft by The Planetary Society, will demonstrate to the space community that solar sailing is a viable and inexpensive way of navigating the cosmos. Learn more at sail.planetary.org. Voiceover:
In 2015, The Planetary Society, the world’s largest non-profit space organization, launched its citizen funded spacecraft, LightSail 1. The test spacecraft successfully deployed its reflective mylar sails, proving that our sail deployment technology works. Now we are taking the next step with LightSail 2. We will demonstrate to the space community that solar sailing really works and is an inexpensive way of navigating the cosmos. We’ll be launching on onboard the SpaceX Falcon Heavy, the world’s most powerful operational rocket. LightSail 2 will go deeper into space and attempt the first controlled solar sail flight in Earth orbit. The world will be watching as our little satellite propels us into the future of space exploration. Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: http://planet.ly/ytsubscribe Follow us!
