👩🏽💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford. I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars. http://drbecky.uk.com

The Astronomer Royal on alien oceans | with Michele Dougherty
Could there be oceans (and even life) hiding beneath the icy surfaces of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn?
For most of the history of planetary science, the search for habitable worlds focused on planets close to the Sun, where surface water can stay liquid. But data from NASA's Cassini spacecraft at Saturn and the Galileo spacecraft at Jupiter has overturned that assumption, revealing that several icy moons may be hiding vast oceans of liquid water beneath their frozen crusts.
In this Discourse, Michele Dougherty — the first female Astronomer Royal — takes us through the Cassini mission's most extraordinary discovery: a plume of water vapour erupting from the south pole of Saturn's tiny moon Enceladus, and what it revealed about the possibility of life beyond Earth. She then looks ahead to ESA's JUICE mission, launched in 2023, which is now on its way to spend years studying Jupiter's giant moons Ganymede, Callisto and Europa — all suspected to hide oceans of their own.

Saturn Isn't Just a Planet
The Sun is more than 99% of the mass of the solar system. The sun is the center of the solar system. The Sun without the /rest/ of the solar system would be extremely boring.
By far the most interesting thing about the sun is that it is part of a system of worlds, and this has become pretty obviously true to me about Saturn, Jupiter, and to some extent Uranus and Neptune.
If we skip the worlds that orbit these giants, we are missing the most interesting part of the story.

Falling into Saturn in VR 360°
In this Video we are falling into Saturn in a 360° VR Spaceflight. Please note that the visuals presented in this video are not scientifically accurate representations. While the imagery was created with research in mind — drawing from what we know about Saturn's atmospheric layers, pressure zones, and states of matter — it remains an artistic expression rather than a simulation. True conditions inside Saturn are largely theoretical, and no direct visual data exists for most of what is shown. This video is meant to inspire curiosity, not serve as a scientific reference. Hope you enjoy :) With love Astromagazine.

Journey into the SECRETS of the planet SATURN! SPACE DOCUMENTARY
Far beyond the warm light of Earth’s skies, past the red deserts of Mars and the turbulent storms of Jupiter, lies one of the most mesmerizing and enigmatic worlds in our solar system: Saturn. Known for its iconic rings, this gas giant is more than just a celestial beauty. Saturn is a realm of extreme physics, dynamic weather, and hidden mysteries. From its massive storms to its complex magnetic field, Saturn has captivated astronomers for centuries, and recent space missions have only deepened the fascination. As we continue to explore the outer reaches of our solar neighborhood, Saturn stands out not only as a visual marvel but as a window into the forces that shaped the early solar system and continue to influence it today.
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the solar system. Composed mostly of hydrogen and helium, it lacks a solid surface and instead features a layered atmosphere with striking patterns, deep bands, and powerful jet streams. The planet rotates at an incredible speed—completing a full turn on its axis in just over ten hours—which flattens its poles and stretches its equator, giving it a distinct oblate shape. These rapid rotations also contribute to the creation of violent storms and wind systems that encircle the planet with speeds exceeding 1,800 kilometers per hour.
One of the most striking features of Saturn is its rings. Though other gas giants have ring systems, none are as expansive or bright as Saturn's. Made primarily of water ice mixed with rocky debris, the rings span hundreds of thousands of kilometers but are astonishingly thin—often less than a kilometer thick. Each ring orbits Saturn at a slightly different speed, creating the illusion of smooth motion from afar. The rings are divided into several sections, labeled alphabetically in the order they were discovered, with the A, B, and C rings being the most prominent. The mysterious Cassini Division, a wide gap between the A and B rings, adds to their complexity.
The origin of Saturn’s rings is still a matter of scientific debate. Some theories suggest they are remnants of a destroyed moon or comet that came too close and was torn apart by tidal forces. Others propose the rings formed during the early stages of Saturn’s development, making them nearly as old as the planet itself. Studies from the Cassini spacecraft, which orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017, indicate the rings may be relatively young—perhaps only a few hundred million years old—but their exact history remains unclear.
Saturn’s atmosphere is another source of intrigue. Beneath its hazy upper layers lies a dynamic system driven by internal heat and complex chemistry. The most iconic weather feature is the hexagon—a massive, six-sided jet stream that circles the planet's north pole. This geometric structure, nearly 30,000 kilometers wide, remains stable and unmoving despite the chaotic winds around it. No other planet in the solar system displays such a feature, and its cause is still not fully understood. Observations suggest the hexagon may extend deep into Saturn’s atmosphere, possibly linked to differences in temperature and rotation speeds at various altitudes.
The south pole of Saturn is home to a different kind of storm—a massive hurricane-like vortex with a well-defined eye, surrounded by high-speed winds. This storm, many times larger than any seen on Earth, provides insight into the mechanics of planetary weather and the behavior of gas giants. These extreme systems are not just atmospheric curiosities; they also affect the planet’s magnetosphere and auroral activity, shaping the environment of its many moons.
Saturn’s magnetic field is powerful, though not as intense as Jupiter’s. It plays a crucial role in shaping the planet’s space environment, capturing charged particles and generating spectacular auroras near the poles. Unlike Earth’s magnetic field, which is tilted relative to its rotation axis, Saturn’s is almost perfectly aligned. This unusual alignment challenges existing models of planetary magnetism and has prompted scientists to reevaluate how such fields are generated within gas giants.
Orbiting this massive planet is an entire miniature solar system of moons—at least 145 confirmed satellites, each with unique features and characteristics. Among the most studied is Titan, Saturn’s largest moon and the second-largest in the solar system. Titan has a thick atmosphere rich in nitrogen and methane, with weather systems that include clouds, rain, and even lakes of liquid hydrocarbons. Its surface features rivers, dunes, and cryovolcanoes, making it one of the most Earth-like worlds ever discovered, despite its extreme cold.
Another moon, Enceladus, has captivated scientists with its geysers of water vapor that erupt from cracks near its south pole. These plumes shoot material into space and have been found to contain organic molecules, suggesting the presence of a subsurface ocean beneath its icy crust.

NASA’s Snake-Like Robots Searching for Life on Saturn’s Moon
Go to https://ground.news/startalk to stay fully informed on Space and Science news. Save 40% off through my link for unlimited access to the Vantage plan this month.
Could we use robots to explore the oceans of Enceladus? In this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and co-host Harrison Greenbaum dive deep into the EELS Project, an effort to send a snake-like robot to Saturn's moon Enceladus with Matthew Travers, a roboticist at the Biorobotics Lab at Carnegie Mellon University.
What comes to mind when you think of robots? We explore how the gap between science fiction and reality is closing faster than you might think. We discuss the ethics of robotics and whether we should name robots. Should robots resemble lifeforms, or should they be designed purely for function? Discover the engineering challenges of creating robots with multiple degrees of freedom, like those with six legs, and the complications that come with increased control and articulation.
Learn about the EEL Project, an effort to send a snake-like robot to Saturn's moon Enceladus. This robot, designed to navigate the treacherous geysers and sinkholes of Enceladus, will be tasked with exploring subsurface oceans and collecting samples. WE explore the intricate design of the robot, built with eight segments and 16 motors to ensure redundancy and reliability on this daring mission.
Tune in to discover how engineers are pushing the boundaries of robotics, working alongside NASA, and tackling some of the most complex challenges in space exploration. Plus, get a cosmic perspective on why robots in movies might be more unimaginative than you think and why a tandem review of robot morality is essential as we venture further into this technological frontier.

Will Dragonfly Visit Titan's Lakes? - Largest Moon Of Saturn
In this video I go over a few reasons with regards to why NASA decided to not send Dragonfly to land directly at the poles of Titan where there are lakes, then after discussing those reasons I go over why despite the fact that Titan will be far away from the lakes at the equator there is still a chance that it might reach them eventually.
Intro, outro and many other clips in this video were made with Space Engine.
