Clay Fellowship Lecture : Fast Radio Bursts
In the last decade, we have established the existence of extragalactic fast radio bursts (FRBs) of sub-millisecond durations, likely originating at cosmologically significant distances. Explaining the FRB phenomenon has proved a compelling challenge to theory, with the number of distinct models only this year being superseded by the 65 reported events. The high FRB occurrence rate (comparable to the core-collapse supernova rate), isotropic-equivalent luminosities comparable to the most luminous quasars, the wide range of intrinsic and propagation-induced phenomenology, and the repetition of at least a sub-sample of objects are particularly noteworthy. FRBs have also opened a powerful new window into otherwise unseen matter in the Universe. Observations of large FRB samples will help assess the baryon contents and physical conditions in the hot/diffuse circumgalactic, intracluster, and intergalactic medium, and test extant compact-object dark matter models. I will review the state of the field and its promise for the future.

Get one month free of Dashlane Premium by going to https://www.dashlane.com/answerswithjoe Fast Radio Bursts are exactly what they sound like. They're highly energetic bursts of radio waves that last mere milliseconds. And they're totally random. Because of how elusive they are, scientists are still trying to explain this weird phenomena. But thanks to new telescopes like CHIME in Canada, we're getting closer to the solution to this science mystery. Help grow this channel on Patreon!

Astronomers detect mysterious bursts of radio signals from distant galaxy
Astronomers over the years have picked up dozens of "fast radio bursts" (FRBs) -- mysterious radio signals detected from an unknown part of the cosmos. But for only the second time, they have now found one that repeats itself, making it more likely that we might find out where they come from.
The Consequences of Finding ET's Signal
It is impossible to know when we will get our first contact and what this message will say, but we know that this discovery will have an ethical and political impact on our world. And then what will happen next? Will the detection of ET be dangerous or beneficial for humankind? Will it change everything, including our place in the universe or will we simply continue our life knowing that ‘We are not alone’? For more than four decades, astronomers have been searching for techno-signatures: signals coming from distant technological civilizations. The first SETI searches began in the 1960s by searching for extraterrestrial radio waves and have more recently expanded to include optical (visible) signals, such as powerful laser pulses. We know that, like technological progress, the search is also accelerating, evolving with the development of new antenna arrays and new networks of telescopes which will soon be capable of listening to the entire sky, everywhere, and all the time. To discuss these points, we invited four SETI researchers: Julia DeMarines, Astrobiologist and Science Communicator at the UC Berkeley SETI Research Center, Doug Vakoch, President of METI, Eliot Gillum, director of LASER SETI and Seth Shostak, Senior Astronomer at the SETI Institute.

Are Fast Radio Bursts Signs of Intelligent Life? Featuring Dr. Avi Loeb
Fast Radio Bursts, or FRBs are blasts of radio energy that hit Earth from outside the milky way galaxy, lasting only milliseconds before they disappear. Dr. Avi Loeb of Harvard University and Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics discusses the possibility that they could be leakage from highly powerful lasers pushing on light sails or other signs of advanced extraterrestrial intelligence. As well as the interstellar object known as Oumuamua and if it is a solar sail or alien probe. Avi Loeb also discusses what are the most dangerous and immediate threats to life on earth from space, asteroid collisions, solar flares including the carrington event, and black holes. "COULD SOLAR RADIATION PRESSURE EXPLAIN ‘OUMUAMUA’S PECULIAR ACCELERATION?", Bialy and Loeb, 2018

OTD in Space - Nov. 16: Arecibo Observatory Broadcasts Interstellar Message
On November 16, 1974, humans sent their first message to the stars in an attempt to contact extraterrestrials. They did this using what was then the largest radio telescope in the world, located at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. A group of scientists led by Frank Drake and Carl Sagan sent their message to the M13 star cluster. The message was written in binary code and contained information about human DNA. It also included figures of a human, the solar system and the Arecibo telescope. The idea was that if any aliens were to receive the signal and figure out how to decode it, they would know where it came from. Because M13 is 25,000 light-years away, it will take 25,000 years for any M13 aliens to hear our message — if they are even out there. The Arecibo message is only one of several messages intended for extraterrestrials. We have also included messages on several spacecraft, such as Pioneer and Voyager.
Breakthrough Listen to Partner with the MeerKAT Telescope to Search a Million Stars
Listen will undertake a major observing program using the new MeerKAT array in South Africa. MeerKAT combines 64 individual dishes as a single instrument to be used by teams from across the globe in pursuit of a range of science goals. Listen’s MeerKAT search for signs of extraterrestrial technology will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, operating in parallel with the other surveys. Listen's survey will examine a million individual stars in the quietest part of the radio spectrum, a factor of 1000 more targets than any previous search.

The Square Kilometre Array Telescope and SETI
The Square Kilometre Array is an ambitious project to create a gigantic telescope from two enormous arrays of smaller antennas located in South Africa and Australia. The huge collecting area of the SKA will give it unprecedented sensitivity, enabling it to search for faint signals from far away sources. For SETI, it will be able to detect civilizations on other planets orbiting other stars, even if they are no more technologically advanced than our own civilization, and are not deliberately messaging us. In this video, we sit down with some of the scientists and engineers who are spearheading the SKA project, at the SKA headquarters in Jodrell Bank, near Manchester, England.
