The New Horizons Spacecraft Just Helped Make First Stereoscopic Image Of A Star's Location
Much of astronomy is based around measuring the distances to celestial bodies, and the distances are all rooted in a technique called stellar parallax. This has been used since the 19th century to measure the distances to stars, and all measurements of interstellar and intergalactic distances are based on the measurement of the tiny wobble in a star's apparent position.
The problem is, despite it being a fundamental technique at the core of astronomy, nobody has ever been able to make a simple, obvious demonstration of it, until now.

The Epic of New Horizons and its journey to Pluto
New Horizons's journey to Pluto was a 30-year epic of political, ideological and scientific conflicts. This, more or less, is what happened.

New Horizons at Pluto and MU69/Ultima Thule
Carey Lisse speaking at AHSP 2019 on New Horizons at Pluto and MU69/Ultima Thule
Steve Conard - The chase for Ultima Thule
The New Horizons spacecraft collected data on Kuiper Belt Object 2014MU69, nicknamed Ultima Thule, during a flyby encounter in December and January. In this talk, Steve discusses the efforts to find Ultima Thule, to characterize it prior to the encounter, the preparations for the encounter, and the data collected by the LORRI instrument. As a long-time amateur astronomer, being part of the exploration process for the most distant object visited by a spacecraft was one of the highlights of his career.

RASC-TC New Horizons: The Continuing Mission with Professor Paul Delaney
New Horizons: The Continuing Voyages with Professor Paul Delaney, Senior Lecturer, Allan I. Carswell Chair for the Public Understanding of Astronomy, York University. This talk was held on January 16, 2019 at the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada - Toronto Centre Speaker's Night held at the Ontario Science Centre. In 2006, the space probe New Horizons set sail for the most distant planned target intercept in history: the exploration of (Dwarf) Planet Pluto in July 2015. Pluto was revealed to be a destination of immense interest and contradictions heralding the amazing success of the New Horizon encounter. Because the space probe performed so well and was in such excellent health, the mission scientists had decided that if NASA concurred, the mission would continue with a target of the asteroid 2014MU69 on in the Kuiper Belt on January 1, 2019, which, too, is now history, revealing insights into yet another mysterious world. This talk summarises the exploits of New Horizon and will set the stage for the possibility of a new target within the Kuiper Belt.
How NASA discovered Ultima Thule? New Horizons
In this video, we discuss how the Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule was discovered for the New Horizons flyby. To learn more about the Ultima Thule Flyby, click here: https://youtu.be/xB_Jj9uBVW8 We begin by discussing how various objects are observed here on Earth, and what factors come into play when discussing their brightness. Then, we look at the New Horizons mission plan, and see that astronomers were given a decade to discover objects that the spacecraft might be able to visit. After years of ground-based observations, they realized that they would need to utilize the Hubble Space Telescope to overcome some of the challenges of discovering this object. Thanks for watching!
