A Tour of a Positive Feedback Black Hole
Astronomers have uncovered a black hole that may have sparked the birth of stars over a phenomenal distance of more than a million light years and across multiple galaxies. If confirmed, this discovery, made with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes, would represent the widest reach ever seen for a black hole acting as a stellar kick-starter. The supermassive black hole is located in the center of a galaxy about 9.9 billion light years from Earth. This galaxy has at least seven neighboring galaxies, according to two optical light telescopes in Chile and Arizona. Previously, astronomers had discovered a jet from this black hole in radio waves with the Very Large Array. Using Chandra, researchers then detected a bright X-ray source around the black hole as well as a diffuse cloud of X-rays at one end of the jet. Astronomers think this thin cloud of X-rays probably represents a bubble in the galaxy's hot gas created by the jet. As this bubble expanded, it likely created a shock wave that triggered star formation as it moved. Researchers estimate from their data that four neighboring galaxies, each about 400,000 light years away from the end of the black hole's jet, have dramatically increased rates of star formation. This result represents a relatively rare occurrence where a black hole is actually boosting star formation rather than suppressing it. On top to that, this is the farthest that astronomers have ever seen this effect of so-called positive feedback extend. Scientists will continue to study objects similar to this one in the hopes of trying to determine if this phenomenon is common — or not — in the formation of groups and clusters of galaxies.
NASA Science Live: Black Hole 101
How do we study black holes if we can’t even see them? Could a black hole “eat” an entire galaxy? What would happen if you fell into a black hole? Join experts on #NASAScience Live as we take a journey to explore these mysterious objects that can be found all over the universe.
This space telescope can see black holes using the smoothest mirrors ever created
The Chandra X-Ray Observatory was the heaviest payload to be carried into space by a shuttle. It's been looking at supernovas, black holes and spiral galaxies for two decades. Observatory director Belinda Wilkes gives you a tour of Chandra's universe.

Violent flaring near the black hole MAXI J1820+070, 10,000 light years away
An animation of the black hole system MAXI J1820+070, based upon observed characteristics during a rapid accretion episode in March 2018. Purple denotes X-ray radiation seen by the NICER instrument on the ISS, and the rest of the colours show visible light seen by HiPERCAM in La Palma. The video is shown at roughly 1/10th of the true speed. The black hole is seen to feed off the companion star, drawing the material out into a vast disc of inspiralling matter. As it falls closer to the black hole itself, some of that material is shot out into energetic pencil-beam 'jets' above and below the disc. The light here is intense enough to outshine the Sun a hundred times over can be seen to be crackling and shimmering from thousands of light years away. The actual X-ray and visible light time-series data captured appears in graphs about halfway through. X-rays likely emerge from very close to the black hole, while the visible light comes from the inner parts of the jet, after a fraction-of-a-second delay. The system is about 10,000 lightyears distant - too far away to resolve all the structure illustrated; but by looking at the different colours of the spectrum and how they relate to one another, we are able to 'peer in' and infer the structures of these enigmatic systems. This video was created using Krita, GIMP, and PhotoMirage. With thanks to Rob Hynes' 'BinSim' software for help modelling the system. The research work appears in "A Black Hole X-ray Binary at ∼100 Hz: Multiwavelength Timing of MAXI J1820+070 with HiPERCAM and NICER", J. A. Paice et al, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Oxford University Press. The paper is available from https://doi.org/10.1093/mnrasl/slz148

NASA's TESS Watches a Star Getting Devoured by a Black Hole
Like this content? Please consider becoming a patron: https://patreon.com/DeepAstronomy
In this episode, our favorite exoplanet hunting space telescope, known as TESS, has managed to capture a black hole tearing a star apart. Not only is TESS finding worlds around other stars, but it’s keeping a vigilant eye on the rest of the galaxy to find things just like this. According to NASA, capturing this event is hard, it only happens once every ten to a hundred thousand years in our galaxy. #TESS #BlackHoles Interested in getting into amateur astronomy? Before the Big Bang 1O : Black Hole Genesis
We interview the creators of 3 models of the early universe that imply the big bang came from a black hole in a mother universe. The models are Cosmological Natural Selection (CNS), The Holographic Big Bang and Cosmology with Spin and Torsion. The creators interviewed are Lee Smolin, Nikodem Poplawski and Niayesh Ashfordi. Recently it has also been shown that a theory of quantum gravity called Causal Set Theory may realise CNS. And so we also talk to Stav Zalel who has worked on this idea and cosmologist Aureliein Barau The order of subjects is

Black Holes and Gravitational Waves
Emanuele Berti of Johns Hopkins University
Black holes hold the key to some of the pressing mysteries in modern science. Whether in isolation or in binary systems, they are excellent laboratories to probe high-energy physics and Einstein’s theory of gravity. The detection of gravitational waves from binary mergers marked the dawn of a new era in astronomy, and planned space-based detectors will open a new observational window at low frequencies. Gravitational waves from compact binaries carry important information on their astrophysical formation mechanisms, and on the evolution of the universe as a whole. Join us for a discussion about how gravitational-wave detectors can not only advance our understanding of black hole formation and growth, but also search for potential “smoking guns” of new physics.
Host: Dr. Frank Summers of the Space Telescope Science Institute
Recorded live on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, U.S.A.

Black Hole Visualization
This new visualization of a black hole illustrates how its gravity distorts our view, warping its surroundings as if seen in a carnival mirror. The visualization simulates the appearance of a black hole where infalling matter has collected into a thin, hot structure called an accretion disk. The black hole’s extreme gravity skews light emitted by different regions of the disk, producing the misshapen appearance. Bright knots constantly form and dissipate in the disk as magnetic fields wind and twist through the churning gas. Nearest the black hole, the gas orbits at close to the speed of light, while the outer portions spin a bit more slowly. This difference stretches and shears the bright knots, producing light and dark lanes in the disk. Viewed from the side, the disk looks brighter on the left than it does on the right. Glowing gas on the left side of the disk moves toward us so fast that the effects of Einstein’s relativity give it a boost in brightness; the opposite happens on the right side, where gas moving away us becomes slightly dimmer. This asymmetry disappears when we see the disk exactly face on because, from that perspective, none of the material is moving along our line of sight. Closest to the black hole, the gravitational light-bending becomes so excessive that we can see the underside of the disk as a bright ring of light seemingly outlining the black hole. This so-called 'photon ring' is composed of multiple rings, which grow progressively fainter and thinner, from light that has circled the black hole two, three, or even more times before escaping to reach our eyes. Because the black hole modeled in this visualization is spherical, the photon ring looks nearly circular and identical from any viewing angle. Inside the photon ring is the black hole’s shadow, an area roughly twice the size of the event horizon — its point of no return. Simulations and movies like these really help us visualize what Einstein meant when he said that gravity warps the fabric of space and time.

TESS Catches its First Star-destroying Black Hole
For the first time, NASA’s planet-hunting Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) watched a black hole tear apart a star from start to finish, a cataclysmic phenomenon called a tidal disruption event. The blast, named ASASSN-19bt, was found on Jan. 29 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN), a worldwide network of 20 robotic telescopes. Shortly after the discovery, ASAS-SN requested follow-up observations by NASA’s Swift satellite, ESA’s (European Space Agency’s) XMM-Newton and ground-based 1-meter telescopes in the global Las Cumbres Observatory network. The disruption occurred in TESS’s continuous viewing zone, which is always in sight of one of the satellite’s four cameras. This allowed astronomers to view the explosion from beginning to end. This video shows images of a tidal disruption event called ASASSN-19bt taken by NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and Swift missions, along with an animation illustrating how it unfolded. Because ASASSN-19bt occurred in the TESS continuous viewing zone, the satellite observed the full duration of the event. This video is public domain and along with other supporting visualizations can be downloaded from the Scientific Visualization Studio at: http://svs.gsfc.nasa.gov/13237 Read more: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2019/nasa-s-tess-mission-spots-its-1st-star-shredding-black-hole If you liked this video, subscribe to the NASA Goddard YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/NASAExplorer Follow NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

LSST & BLACK HOLES, Public Lecture
Thursday, August 15, 2019 @ 7:00 pm
Hilton El Conquistador Turquoise Ballroom
10000 North Oracle Road, Tucson, Arizona, 85704
The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) is approaching completion on the Cerro Pachón ridge in north-central Chile. When science operations begin in 2022, LSST will scan the sky with the world’s largest digital camera, creating a 500 petabyte set of images and data products that will address the most pressing questions about the structure and evolution of the universe and the objects in it. Among these objects are black holes, objects so dense they warp the fabric of space-time, objects whose incredible properties are only recently becoming known to us. You are invited to join us for an evening of black hole science and learn about Tucson’s leadership role in LSST’s voyage of scientific discovery.
During this public event, LSST Project Manager Victor Krabbendam will provide an update on LSST construction progress, University of Arizona astrophysicist Feryal Özel will discuss the latest black hole discoveries from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) and Northwestern University’s Raffaella Margutti will describe what we have learned from the first multi-messenger observations of a neutron star merger with gravitational waves and light, and what might be revealed when LSST begins its ten-year survey.
Speakers:
Raffaella Margutti, Northwestern University
Raffaella Margutti is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Northwestern University. She utilizes observations of transient astrophysical phenomena including stellar explosions and stellar tidal disruptions by supermassive black holes. She serves as the chair of the Gravitational Wave source follow-up with LSST within the LSST Transient and Variable Stars science collaboration. As an astrophysicist, her research specifically focuses on the biggest explosions and disruptions that occur in our Universe: Supernovae, Gamma-Ray Bursts, compact stellar mergers that are sources of gravitational waves and tidal disruption events. Dr. Margutti investigates the physics of these events by combining broad-band observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, including X-ray, UV, optical, IR, and radio. The primary goal of her research is to understand the nature of the physical processes that regulate such dramatic displays.
Feryal Özel, University of Arizona
Feryal Özel is a Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics in the Department of Astronomy at University of Arizona. She has made pioneering contributions to the physics of neutron stars and black holes, as well as to the co-evolution of black holes and galaxies in the early Universe. Dr. Özel led the Model Comparison group for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) that released the first image of a black hole in April of 2019. She made the first accurate measurements of the neutron star radii that constrain the ultradense matter equation of state. Based on her work on accretion flows, she made the first size predictions of the images of nearby supermassive black holes at different wavelengths.
Victor Krabbendam, LSST
Victor Krabbendam has been LSST Project Manager since 2012, after eight years as Project Manager for the LSST Telescope & Site subsystem. Trained as a mechanical engineer, Victor has worked in industry, government, and with major astronomical research facilities including the Hobby-Eberly Telescope at McDonald Observatory and the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope, a 4.1 meter telescope that is LSST's neighbor on Cerro Pachón. Black holes are a singularity from which nothing can escape, even light. A white hole is the opposite. A singularity that nothing can reach. In other words - a black hole reversed in time. They're theoretical and have never been seen, but according to the physics, they could exist. Support me on Patreon!

A Quick Look at GSN 069
Astronomers found X-ray bursts repeating about every nine hours coming from the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy GSN 069. By combining data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton, researchers watched this black hole for a span of almost two months. Over that time, they saw the X-ray output from the black hole rise and fall in a repeating pattern. This is evidence that the black hole is consuming a large amount of material — 4 times that of the Moon — about every 9 hours. Regular "eating" has been seen in stellar-mass black holes, but never in their much larger supermassive black hole cousins. This system gives astronomers a chance to study how hot gas flows around a giant black hole and is ultimately consumed.
A Tour of GSN 069
There's an adage that it's not healthy to skip meals. Apparently, a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy millions of light years away has gotten the message. A team of astronomers found X-ray bursts repeating about every nine hours originating from the center of a galaxy called GSN 069. Obtained with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton, these data indicate that the supermassive black hole located there is consuming large amounts of material on a regular schedule. While scientists had previously found two "stellar-mass" black holes (those that weigh about 10 times the Sun's mass) occasionally undergoing regular outbursts before, this behavior has never been detected from a supermassive black hole until now. The black hole at the center of GSN 069, located 250 million light years from Earth, contains about 400,000 times the mass of the Sun. The researchers estimate that the black hole is consuming about four Moons' worth of material about three times a day. That's equivalent to almost a million billion billion pounds going into the black hole per feeding. ESA's XMM-Newton was the first to observe this phenomenon in GSN 069 with the detection of two bursts on December 24, 2018. Astronomers then followed up with more XMM-Newton observations on January 16 and 17, 2019, and found five outbursts. Observations by Chandra less than a month later, on February 14 and 15, revealed an additional three outbursts. The Chandra data were crucial for this study because they were able to show that the X-ray source is located in the center of the host galaxy, which is where a supermassive black hole is expected to be. The combination of data from Chandra and XMM-Newton implies that the size and duration of the black hole's meals have decreased slightly, and the gap between the meals has increased. Astronomers are planning future observations that will be crucial to see if the trend continues.

Reverberation Mapping Black Hole Accretion Discs
September 5, 2019
Phillips Auditorium
Erin Kara
Host:
Malgosia Sobolewska
Abstract: Accreting supermassive black holes can produce more electromagnetic and kinetic luminosities than the combined stellar luminosity of an entire galaxy. Most of the power output from an Active Galactic Nucleus is released close to the black hole, and therefore studying the inner accretion flow is essential for understanding how black holes grow and how they affect their surrounding environments. In this talk, I will present a new way of probing these environments, through X-ray reverberation mapping, which allows us to map the gas falling on to black holes on microparsec scales and measure the effects of strongly curved spacetime close to the event horizon. I will give an overview of the field and present new results from the NICER observatory of unprecedented reverberation measurements in accreting black hole X-ray binaries.

The black hole mass gap: where are the missing black holes?
When stars die, they usually turn into white dwarves, neutron stars or black holes. But the lowest mass black hole is much larger than the heaviest neutron star, this mass gap has been boggling astronomers for years. So let's discuss! Special thanks to Dr Christopher Berry for helping me out on some of this week’s topic. For more info on mass gaps, be sure to check out Christophers blog, http://cplberry.com he’s also on twitter @cplberry. For further reading, you might want to check out some of the following papers:

Rogue Supermassive Black Holes with Yale’s Dr. Michael Tremmel
Astronomers are working to understand what happens when black holes are set free to roam the Milky Way. Yale’s Dr. Michael Tremmel spoke to John Michael Godier on this episode of Event Horizon about rogue supermassive black holes. They also discussed binary black holes and the physics of galaxy mergers. As well as what would happen if a black hole came near our solar system? The Physics of Black Holes - with Chris Impey
Black holes are the most extreme objects in the universe yet every galaxy has one at its centre.
Buy Chris' book "Einstein's Monsters: The Life and Times of Black Holes" : https://geni.us/NL3M8Hu Chris Impey explores the questions this profound discovery can help answer and the role black holes have played in theoretical physics. Chris Impey is a University Distinguished Professor and deputy head of the astronomy department at the University of Arizona. His research has been supported by $18 million in grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation, and he has had 24 projects given time on astronomy's premier research facility, the Hubble Space Telescope. This talk was filmed in the Ri on 9 May 2019. ---

Is TON-618 the Largest Black Hole in the Universe? [OOTW]
TON-618 has become a hot topic in the study of black holes in recent years as it sits as the most massive known in the universe. This hyper-luminous quasar shines with the brightness of over 140 trillion of our Sun, and its light and radio emissions have reached us from over 10 billion light years away. Today, we will be taking a look at this beast's profile and analysing the facts, theories and competition, as well as the doubts over the understanding of this abnormal quasar. FOLLOW MY NEW TWITTER!
