Yu-Ching (Tony) Chen (UIUC): Searching binary supermassive black holes in astronomical surveys
Binary Supermassive Black Holes are important objects for studying galaxy evolution, gravitational wave, and cosmology. However, searching close BSBHs at high redshift (z >1) is difficult due to the angular resolution of the telescopes. For the first half of the talk, I will present our new discovery of candidate periodic quasars as possible BSBHs at milli-pc scale. The search is based on 20-yr light curves by combining DES and SDSS. I will also discuss the implications of those candidates. For the second half of the talk, I will show a new astrometric technique to find the unresolved dual/lensed quasars at sub kpc scale using Gaia. The follow-up HST observations returned handful dual/lensed quasar candidates proving the feasibility of the technique. Those candidates if confirmed could form a pilot sample for studying close dual AGNs at high redshift.

What Makes Supermassive Black Holes?
Supermassive black holes--objects billions of times the mass of the Sun--have perplexed astronomers for years. They are a true challenge to cosmic theories. That's because theoretically there hasn't been enough time since the big bang for them to form. So, what makes supermassive black holes? Black Hole in the Milky Way!
For decades, astronomers have talked about the possibility of a massive black hole hunkered down at the center of our galaxy. But evidence for such a bizarre beast had largely been indirect until UCLA astronomer Andrea Ghez used the Keck telescope to directly probe the Milky Way’s turbulent heart.
We’ll show you some of Andrea’s amazing discoveries, and how they led to a Nobel Prize in Physics.

Could we harness the power of a black hole? - Fabio Pacucci

What would it take to make that leap? And where would we get enough energy to power that civilization? Fabio Pacucci explores the possibility of harnessing energy from a black hole to power a galactic civilization. Lesson by Fabio Pacucci, directed by TOTEM Studio. Quick Look: The Recipe for Powerful Quasar Jets
Why do some giant black holes blast out jets, or beams, of material and others do not? Researchers looked at over 700 rapidly growing supermassive black holes (called "quasars") to find out. Rapid spin is needed for a powerful jet, but not all rapidly spinning black holes have powerful jets. A second factor may be needed: a region of diffuse hot gas threaded with strong magnetic fields that only some black hole systems have. The new study draws parallels between these giant black holes and those that weigh less than a hundred times the mass of the Sun. The new research combined data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and other telescopes.

A year in the life of the black hole in the center of M87
A year in the life of M87*, the supermassive black hole in the galaxy M87. The first part shows complicated simulations of the hot material orbiting the black hole using the math of General Relativity and the behavior of plasma. At 92 days the simulations are blurred to show how it would look to the Event Horizon Telescope. The gray bar that appears points toward the average position of the bright spots in the ring. The scale bar shows 40 microarseconds, a very tiny angle on the sky; the ring is about 100 billion kilometers across and 55 million light years from Earth. Credit: G. Wong, B. Prather, Ch. Gammie, M. Heaviest Black Hole Merger Ever
Scientists have observed the heaviest black hole merger ever found. On May 21, 2019, three telescopes on Earth received powerful gravitational waves far away from the depths of space. The signal coming from the event known as GW190521 lasted just one-tenth of a second. It turns out they have witnessed what may be the most massive black hole merger ever.

The Most Massive Black Hole Merger is 'Impossible'
This video is sponsored by Blinkist. The first 100 people to go to https://www.blinkist.com/launchpad are going to get unlimited access for 1 week to try it out. You'll also get 25% off the full membership! The most massive Black Hole merger is 'Impossible', but it happened anyway. Two black holes, with masses 85 and 66 times the Sun, merged into an intermediate mass black hole 142 solar masses designated GW190521. The merger was detected by the LIGO-Virgo gravitational wave collaboration. This black hole merger is considered to be "impossible" because at least one of the two black holes that merged couldn't have formed in a supernova. Instead, they belong in the "pair instability mass gap" of black holes and must have merged in a prior generation in a cluster or perhaps in a quasar's accretion disk. 00:00 Start
